Dewey has been with us for three weeks now. While we're all still getting to know each other, Dewey continues to settle in nicely. His manners are very good, and his many boxer traits continue to emerge, as does his wonderful personality. It's apparent that he is very smart, and he is extraordinarily good with basic commands and response. Dewey is getting plenty of daily exercise - long walks in the park and the neighborhood, and lots of fetch time in an enclosed field. He will be signing up for dog obedience class right after thanksgiving. The major issue that we will be working on is Dewey's strong reaction to other dogs. He is as friendly as can be, but practically loses his mind while on leash when another dog approaches. We are certain that Dewey's good overall manners and the strong foundation of training that he obviously received when he was young will help to correct this problem. Halloween was a bit of a challenge, with the door bell ringing every minute, but we used it as a training exercise, with one person remaining with him to ensure that he wouldn't make an even bigger commotion at the front door. Dewey got a new bed this week, and loves it. He also loves all his toys, and he shares his affection with everyone who comes in to the house. Dewey is doing just great!
Dewey’s doing great! He has settled in so well J. He was much more relaxed during his second week; I had to work several days and he was a very good boy, keeping me company in my office. He has patience and minds his manners in the house (most of the time!). He is eating well – eating all his food at mealtime!
He loves to play with his duck and his carrot – his two stuffed squeaker toys. We play mini-fetch with them in the house, but he also is very good at amusing himself. We walk every day at least once and at least every other day we go to a large, fenced-in area and play fetch. He LOVES to play fetch – he runs like the wind and when we’re all done he drinks like crazy out of a water bottle. He doesn’t like to go in his crate, but he goes in when we tell him to – he never goes in otherwise. And when we have him go in the crate we always give him a treat or his kong, but he never touches it until we return home. But he’s calm when we leave and also when we return; today was the longest we’ve left him – four hours.
Dewey is also doing well at his commands – all his previous training is shining through! Yes, we had a trainer come out yesterday – more for questions we had and suggestions to tide us over until he goes to dog obedience class. He showed Luis (the trainer) that he knows a lot of commands J. The biggest thing we have to work on is his excitement when he sees other dogs on walks. Luis had homemade liver treats and Dewey really seemed to like them, so I’m going to make some and try using those to redirect his focus on walks. He’s a wonderful – and goofy – boxer boy! He’s given us a lot of joy in just two weeks.
Dewey is adjusting well and he has been
a very good boy! We’ve been working on “come” a lot, both inside from all over the house, and outside in the backyard, and then
really praising him, because when he finally came to me in the yard yesterday, he was cowering, which he has done a number of times,
we are working on building up his confidence and letting him know how wonderful he is for coming.
We’ve been going
for hour or longer walks every day, and then a shorter one in the evening. He walks pretty well but does weave somewhat which
I have a feeling will improve the more confident he becomes with us and with our walks. But he gets VERY excited when he sees
another dog and wants to run over to greet and play – I think (I don’t think it’s aggression just excitement). Right now I am
making him sit and wait since he is so strong. We have a trainer coming over in a week to evaluate him re: training
so I think we’ll hold off on buying the side harness or anything else until then.
He hasn’t been eating much or all of his food
the first time we put it down, but the last two meals he has finished it off when we put it back down later. .
With
all that said, he is a WONDERFUL dog! He is so sweet and very smart (so we think) and all that is shining through even as he
is still adjusting and trying to figure things out! He stays in his bed all night, and waits to be invited out in the morning.
I know he loves to play with his ball and run, so we will be taking him to somewhere large and fenced but without other dogs so we
can do some off leash playing outside.
We’re so happy to have him here with us!!
Meet Dewey! This handsome boy is coming into the program as his current home no longer has the time to
care for him. Dewey is currently being crated 9 hours day and is not getting the proper exercise or mental stimulation
a young Boxer needs. When left outside in the back yard, will start digging holes, which is a clear sign of boredom.
We have been told that Dewey has gone to doggie day care and is good with other dogs, but we have no history with cats. He’s
been around children, a 4 year old and a 6 month old. He knows some basic commands, like “go to bed” ,
sit, down, etc , but his new family must be willing to attend a basic obedience class with him. Dewey walks well
on a leash, but is excited to meet other dogs, but not overly excited. Overall his is a sweet, affection, handsome boy
that will make a wonderful companion! Please check back soon as we get to know Dewey in his foster home.
