We have gradually increased the time Lilly is left alone with a max of 4 hours. As noted before, she does best
with free roam as she does not like being confined. She has had a few accidents by the front door. We are not sure yet if this is
when we leave, return or somewhere in between. This is also not always the way we come and go. She is not distructive when left
with free roam, but will mess up the curtains if she can not see outside. She loves to look out the window and is usually sitting
by the window when we get home. Lilly likes to snuggle & give boxer kisses. She has good manners and is a quick learner. Lilly
will do best in a home with another dog, especially one that likes to wrestle & is confident enough to let play the dominant role
sometimes. She also needs a home where someone is home more often than not. (tag along to work? doggy day care?) structure is good
for her. Lilly is filling in nicely with the combination of regular exercise and healthy diet. Some words to best describe Lilly -
sweet, adorable, curious, smart and agile.
Lilly made some new friends this week. We had
a few friends over for the Patriots game on Sunday and then family and friends over for Thanksgiving. She was friendly, welcoming
and liked the extra hands to pet her - everyone fell in love with her! Lilly has a nice combination of being independent, but
also wanting to cuddle and get attention. She will let you know when she wants attention, is hungry or needs to potty by whimpering
or barking. This is also how she lets Rocky know its play time. She is doing well with learning the hand signals for basic commands
so we will continue to work on these and add more as we go along. Lilly continues to sleep in the crate at night with crate and bedroom
doors open. She will whimper and bark if left locked in the crate with no one in the room. She has displayed similar behavior when
being confined to a room, even with us in the room with her ...She does best with free roam. Lilly has showed interest in tennis balls,
rope toy and stuffed toy, but would rather wrestle with Rocky most of the time.
Meet Lilly! This adorable
girl is being surrender as her current owners are moving and are unable to take her with them. Lilly is a 4 year old, very sweet and
gentle deaf girl who is full of wiggles and gentle kisses. Lilly does tend to fixate on other dogs and movement, so her new
home will need to work on redirecting her. We are told she has a high prey drive. Lilly lives with a cat, but her current home has
worked hard to help desensitize her to their cat. She has also lived with 3 small dogs in the past and did well with them. Lilly knows
a few basic commands, but has had no formal obedience training. We will be requiring her new home to take her to a basic obedience
class. Lilly does have separation anxiety and will scream and have accidents if left alone in her crate. Her new home will need to
work with Lilly on proper crate training and her separation anxiety. We think Lilly would benefit from the companionship of another
dog, so we will be looking to place her in a home with another dog. She would also do well in a home where someone is home more often
than not and in a home with a fenced in yard. Please check back for updates as we secure a foster home for this beautiful girl.
Deaf Dogs: Deaf dogs make wonderful companions if you are willing to make an effort to live with them successfully. Most importantly, they need to be carefully supervised and managed on leash at all times or within a confined area. The deaf dog is not handicapped – They simply can’t hear. They do not know they are deaf. Typically, deaf dogs compensate for the lack of hearing sound by developing a stronger reliance on visual signals and on their sense of smell. Lilly's favorite things are wrestling, snuggling, walks and looking out the window. We have had a lot of snow
in the last month and Lilly seems to enjoy it. On walks she wants to climb the snow mounds to get a better view of things and mark
them. Lilly has put on some needed weight and looks healthy and muscular. She has yet to meet a human she didn't like. We haven't
had a lot of opportunities to introduce Lilly to other dogs yet. She seems very interested in all dogs that walk by the house. She
is a sweet girl that likes attention. If your family likes boxer snuggles and kisses and you have a dog looking for a companion that
will play rough or curl up for naps Lilly may be your girl!
In the past few weeks Lilly had a few firsts
with us. She had a bath in the tub and did great! She had no issue being picked up and put in the tub, staying calm and still
making it nice and easy. (maybe she can show Rocky how it's done) She also had hives. We aren't completely sure why, but we believe
it was a spider brought in with the firewood. She acted normal, except for the bumps all over. Benadryl helped, but it didn't fully
go away until after a shot of steroids. We never had a deaf dog before Lilly and we had a lot of uncertainty. TBRI gave us some
information to read and better understand deaf dogs. We decided to take her in because the opportunity to learn more ourselves while
helping her was worth the challenge. Lilly is a quick learner, has good manners and likes to keep an eye on where you are. This
makes getting her attention and teaching hand signs easier. Lilly is a love bug and worth every minute of extra time to understand
what she needs to be comfortable and happy in your home!
